Complicated hardware and sensor fusion may not solve all the problems seen with Waymo, like going wrong way, stuck in traffic/intersections, picking up passengers in the middle of busy streets, running in circles for no apparent reasons, blocking bicycle lanes, stuck in construction zones, not recognizing drivable space, etc. For context, Waymo comes with 5 spinning lidars, 6 radars, 29 cameras, 8 ultra sonic sensors. Autonomous driving is not about how complicated your sensor suite is but rather how smart the system is.
Back to San Francisco, CA for yet another critical safety failure in the middle of an intersection for driverless Robotaxi company Waymo. As we continue to sort through these videos, the one thing we find over and over again is that Waymo’s are not good with intersections. The world’s foremost authority on autonomous vehicle safety @RealDanODowd should have a report for us shortly. The question that everybody wants to know, Will it be easy to fix the defective software and hardware or should Waymo terminate the service until these vehicles are safe to be used in public?
