🚨🇵🇹 PORTUGAL TO SAM ALTMAN’S WORLDCOIN: STOP SCANNING EYEBALLS FOR CRYPTO
Portugal’s data regulator (CNPD) has ordered Sam Altman’s iris-scanning project, Worldcoin, to halt biometric data collection for 90 days.
The CNPD flagged major privacy concerns, including data collected from minors, vague consent policies, and the near-impossible task of deleting your data once it’s stored.
Worldcoin, co-founded by Altman (yes, the OpenAI guy), wants to scan your irises using “orb” devices, offering a digital ID and free cryptocurrency in return.
Over 300,000 Portuguese citizens and 4.5 million people globally have already signed up.
But critics aren’t impressed. Spain banned the project this month, Kenya shut it down in August, and Germany is leading an EU-wide investigation.
Privacy advocates warn storing sensitive biometric data could lead to hacking or exploitation, while Altman insists the project is key to verifying humans in an AI-dominated future.
