ETH at $2540, did you chase it?
The Foundation secretly transferred 4,393 coins to the exchange, the ETF lost $500 million in a week, but the price bounced back hard from 2406 to 2575—Is this a dead cat bounce or the last drop?
Let's look at the surface first: bad news bombardment, but no crash.
In the past few days, ETH dropped from 2740 to 2406, a round of leveraged liquidations washed out, then rebounded to 2575-2580, now stuck at 2540. The 24-hour trading volume remains high, but the perpetual funding rate is near neutral, with a bullish bias. The candlesticks tell you: the daily chart is still below the 20-day moving average, MACD below zero line, 4-hour chart shows just an oversold rebound—all indicators are saying one thing: this is a correction, not a reversal.
First thing: Foundation transferring coins? Don't be scared.
Ethereum Foundation-related addresses transferred 4,393 ETH to Kraken today, about $11.1 million. Once the news broke, the group chat exploded: "Foundation is dumping! Run!"
But calmly think—what's ETH's daily trading volume? Hundreds of billions. $11.1 million is just a drop in the bucket.
What is noise? This is it. Unless the Foundation transfers thousands daily continuously, this is just a sentiment negative, it won't change any trend.
What you really should watch is below.
Second thing: ETF bleeding + BitMine stopping buying, marginal buying is disappearing.
Spot ETH ETF has had continuous net outflows until October 9, about $500 million that week, the worst week this year.
More painful is—BitMine's Tom Lee said they will buy about 100,000 more coins, then stop at 5% circulating supply.
In plain terms: the biggest institutional buying in Q3 is exiting.
On the ETF side, institutional marginal pricing is withdrawing. Q3 net inflow was $3 billion, early October redemptions wiped that out. Staking ETFs are attracting funds but can't cover redemptions yet.
In short: fundamentals aren't bad, but buying shifted from "institutions + vaults" to "waiting on macro."
Third thing: Technicals tell you 2540 is the middle ground between bulls and bears.
The path is clear: 10/5 high at 2740 → 10/7 breakdown → 10/9 low at 2406 → today rebound to 2575-2580 then pullback.
Your 2540 is halfway up the rebound.
Daily: 20-day MA at 2640, price below, RSI 47, MACD below zero. The rebound is not confirmed as a reversal.
4-hour: V-shaped recovery from 2406, but above is the previous breakdown zone, a pullback after a breakdown, not a main uptrend start.
Some treat 2520 as a small neckline. Breaking above only means panic ended, not trend reversal.
Key levels, see for yourself:
Resistance above: 2560-2580 (first gate) → 2600-2630 (breakout platform) → 2660-2720 (trend reversal) → 2800
Support below: 2520 (neckline) → 2498-2500 (round number) → 2406-2430 (lifeline)
Your current position: 2540, middle ground, very poor risk-reward.
Bull vs. bear, see for yourself
On one side:
Q3 up 71%, best quarter since 2021
Staking ETFs attracting funds
Perpetual funding rate neutral, no extreme crowding
Glamsterdam, 2027 Hegotá roadmap, mid-to-long term narratives remain
On the other side:
ETF continuous net outflows, institutions withdrawing
BitMine buying about to exit
Staking exit queue at 2026 highs, mild supply pressure
Macro: September rate hike 25bp, 10-year US Treasury 5.3%+, FOMC in two weeks
Macro uncertain, ETH unlikely to trend independently. Before FOMC, reduce leverage.
Trading strategy
1. Base scenario (highest probability this week): 2480-2630 range
Pullback to 2480-2500 shows bottoming (4-hour no new lows, lower shadows), light long positions, stop loss below 2430.
First target 2580, second target 2630. Reduce half at 2580, hold rest to see if it can close above 2600.
Between 2540-2560 stay out or keep only a base position, no adding.
2. Bullish trigger
4-hour close above 2580, pullback not below 2540, can follow long to 2630.
Daily close above 2630 to normalize position size. Above that, watch 2660, 2720.
Do not add at 3000 if 2720 is not broken.
3. Bearish trigger
Volume spike with upper wick at 2560-2580 then fall back below 2520: failed rebound, short, stop loss 2595, targets 2500, then 2460.
4-hour close below 2498 and BTC weakening simultaneously: follow short, targets 2430, lifeline 2406. Below 2400 watch 2350-2280.
Do not chase shorts at 2400 round number, that was last liquidation trap.
4. FOMC week
Reduce leverage and overnight exposure before 10/27. If hawkish hike or dot plot revision, ETH will dump beta first; if clear pause, shorts above 2500 will cover quickly, but that’s event trading, not a reason to build heavy positions now.
Invalid triggers: long positions close below 2430 exit; shorts close above 2630 exit. Do not average down losing positions.
ETH now is like BTC in 2022—
Everyone waits for "the last drop," some bottom at 2400, some chase at 2800. The difference: opening heavy positions in the middle is just paying fees to exchanges.
In a rate hike cycle, all rebounds are escape opportunities unless FOMC pivots.
2540 is neither bottom nor top, it’s the table in the casino—you sit down, you pay the rake.
