The latest financial report from Google's parent company Alphabet has sent an important signal: the AI arms race has not cooled down. Alphabet announces Q2 results: Revenue: $119.8 billion, up 24% year-over-year Operating profit: $40.8 billion, up 30% year-over-year Net profit: $112.1 billion, up 298% year-on-year Both revenue and operating profit exceeded market expectations. However, the significant increase in net profit was mainly driven by one-off factors, including gains from investments in spcx and Anthropic, and does not fully represent growth in core business. What the market truly focuses on is AI investment. Alphabet raises its full-year capital expenditure forecast to: 195 to 205 billion USD Previous guidance was: 170 billion USD This increase is about 17%. This is an important signal for the entire AI industry chain. Previously, the market had long worried that after rapid expansion in AI infrastructure investment, tech giants might start slowing down capital spending. Google continues to increase its investment, at least temporarily alleviating some market doubts. But behind the financial report lies hidden concerns. Alphabet's free cash flow in Q2 was: -5.9 billion USD This is the first time since the company's listing that quarterly free cash flow has turned negative. The main reason is the huge investment in AI infrastructure. The capital market has offered its own judgment on this: After the earnings report was released, Alphabet's stock price fell about 5%. Investors are not worried about Google lacking AI opportunities, but rather: How long does it take for AI investments to turn into real returns? This issue also affects the entire AI hardware industry chain. Regardless of: AI chips HBM storage Optical modules High-speed connection cables Liquid cooling equipment Essentially, all rely on cloud computing giants like Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Amazon to continuously increase capital expenditures. If these giants begin to cut budgets, the upstream supply chain boom cycle may also peak. Therefore, the message conveyed by Alphabet's financial report is quite contradictory: On one hand, AI demand remains strong, with giants investing aggressively; On the other hand, massive capital expenditures are testing investors' patience. The core questions for the future AI industry have already begun with: "Who will invest more?" Becomes: "Who can turn investment into business returns the fastest?" This will determine the winner in the next round of the AI industry chain.
