The S&P 500 shed nearly $2 trillion in market value in 40 minutes on Nov. 5, wiping out the entire previous day's post-midterm rally. Investors rotated out of AI, chip and data center stocks after Democrats swept both houses of Congress, citing concerns over possible regulatory hurdles and a slower infrastructure buildout.

If democrats succeed in blocking the construction of AI datacenters that would result in the companies who already own data centers having a monopoly on intelligence. Intelligence is the most valuable product today, by a mile. Restricting it's ownership to a select few companies who already own infrastructure would create enormous scarcity and pricing power. All of big tech, which have extensive data centers and compute ability already, would become far more valuable. This is also the exact reason these companies raced to build as many data centers as possible as quick as possible. They knew the regulatory path would become more difficult over time and they rushed to build their castle before that happened. Big tech is well positioned to win this battle.

Slowing new AI data centers could make existing ones more valuable. After the US midterms, Microsoft and Amazon shares jumped over 6%. CoreWeave fell around 10%. AI demand remains strong. But companies with existing capacity and deep pockets could become the biggest winners.

OpenAI kicked off its big charm offensive this morning after data center moratoriums went 43-1 during the midterms, and many candidates rode a wave of public opposition to the industry to huge victories. Data centers have been rebranded as Compute Campuses. OpenAI has also released a National Community Compact and a Compute Campus Policy Blueprint.
