The Institutional Crypto Trade Is Getting Wider The most interesting shift in crypto right now is not simply that institutions are buying Bitcoin. It is that the access channel is expanding beyond Bitcoin. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted about $986.9M during the week ending September 4, taking the three-week inflow streak to roughly $3.8B. But the bigger structural signal is what is happening around the rest of the market. $ETH, $SOL and $XRP now have institutional products competing for the same capital pool. On September 4 alone, U.S. spot ETFs recorded about $174.6M of net inflows into $BTC and $25.9M into $ETH. $HYPE products also attracted $10.5M, while Solana products saw a $5.2M outflow. That divergence matters. Institutions are no longer being offered one obvious crypto allocation. They can choose exposure across different ecosystems, narratives and risk profiles. $ETH remains the major DeFi settlement layer. $SOL is competing for high-throughput applications and consumer activity. $XRP is building an institutional payments narrative. $HYPE is showing that a trading protocol can also become an investable asset. And outside the U.S., the access infrastructure is expanding too. Hargreaves Lansdown, one of the UK's largest investment platforms, has started offering nine Bitcoin and Ethereum ETNs to eligible investors. The products provide crypto exposure through listed securities rather than direct wallet custody.
