BitTorrent, created by Bram Cohen in 2001, is a peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol for transferring large files over the Internet, such as video games, TV shows, documents and more. Following its success, Justin Sun, founder of Tron blockchain, acquired BitTorrent in 2018 and integrated it into the Tron blockchain. With its acquisition, BitTorrent expanded the scope of its features to make it a more distributed network.
BTT is a TRC-10 utility token that drives and incentivizes usage of the BitTorrent ecosystem of dApps, including BitTorrent Speed, BitTorrent File System and DLive.
To increase download speeds and file transfer efficiency, BitTorrent Speed automatically bids BTT to other users. Furthermore, users can earn BTT by seeding when file downloads are complete. Similarly, with BitTorrent File System, a fully decentralized file storage system, users can loan out or rent hard drive space with BTT tokens. Lastly, DLive aims to reshape the live streaming industry by creating a decentralized version with its large P2P community.
