Last week, the US Ethereum ETF saw a net outflow of $542 million, marking the worst week since January this year, with nine consecutive days of losses. Bitcoin ETF had a net outflow of $681 million. Solana ETF was even more painful, breaking a 14-week streak of net inflows.
Together, the three major categories lost $1.25 billion in one week.
Everyone in social circles and groups is shouting "institutions are running away" and "it's going to crash."
But after reviewing on-chain data all night, I found something off.
At the same time, the on-chain world tells a different story.
In the past 72 hours, whales quietly absorbed 166,000 ETH, worth over $400 million.
The "consumption period" indicator for ETH soared to 580 million token·days, the highest since June. Simply put: old dormant coins suddenly woke up and moved in large quantities. Experienced players don’t relocate without reason.
While ETFs are fleeing, on-chain is buying up. One side must be acting.
But don’t rush to shout "bottom fishing."
What I want to say most is: these two groups are not the same kind of people.
Those flowing out of ETFs are mostly passive funds. Institutions adjusting positions and managing risk are following procedures, not bearish on your coins.
Those buying on-chain are active funds. Someone made a judgment with real money before acting.
One is "forced selling," the other is "active buying." Panic by treating them as the same signal means you’re being misled.
But I also have to pour cold water on you.
On Hyperliquid, the most profitable addresses have a sleepless detail: among top profitable addresses, short positions account for as much as 53.61%, with short positions valued at $4.578 billion. Among them, addresses suspected to be related to Abraxas Capital hold $1.58 billion in shorts, with BTC and ETH shorts totaling $948 million.
These people have made big money.
Their shorts have two possibilities:
One, hedging. Holding spot while shorting to lock risk is insurance.
Two, genuinely bearish. Expecting further drops and setting traps in advance.
How to tell? Don’t listen to words, watch actions. Monitor their subsequent closing of positions. If shorts remain untouched, it means they think it’s not over; if shorts start to be closed massively, that’s a real signal of reversal.
So the current situation is:
Retail investors panic, institutions passively withdraw, whales buy spot while protecting themselves with shorts.
The smartest money never "only goes long" or "only goes short." They bet on both sides to ensure they won’t be wiped out no matter what.
What about you? Do you hedge? Or rely solely on faith?
ETF data is the rearview mirror; on-chain actions are the steering wheel.
While everyone trembles watching outflow data, smart money is voting with real cash.
But smart money also hedges; others buying in doesn’t mean you can go all in.
