#NvidiaBacksOpenAI Nvidia Is Becoming the Bank of AI Infrastructure
The WSJ reported this week that Nvidia is in talks to provide a $250B financial guarantee for OpenAI to lease SoftBank's 10 GW data center in southern Ohio. Total project cost could top $500B, the largest announced data center project in history.
The detail worth sitting with: the guarantee covers lease and construction debt, but explicitly excludes Nvidia's own chips. So Nvidia underwrites the building, not its chip order book. That's a deliberately clean structure, and it raises a real question: why does OpenAI need a chipmaker to backstop its creditworthiness for a half-trillion dollar project?
On the same day, Nvidia announced a $1B stake in South Korea's Naver and the first US-made GB300 Blackwell chips came off TSMC's Arizona fab. Three significant moves in one news cycle.
The pattern looks less like a chipmaker and more like a vertically integrating infrastructure financier. Nvidia sells you the compute, underwrites your facility, and takes equity stakes in partner ecosystems globally. Whether that concentration of leverage is brilliant or a serious systemic risk is the question worth asking.
The deal isn't done and terms could still change. But if this closes, the AI infrastructure playbook just got rewritten.
Smart consolidation or a single point of failure in the making?
