Bitcoin miners Marathon Digital and Core Scientific are being sued for crypto patents

PANews reported on June 3 that according to Cointelegraph, Malikie Innovations recently sued Bitcoin miners Marathon Digital and Core Scientific, accusing them of infringing their patents by using elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). The company acquired 32,000 "non-core" patents from BlackBerry in 2023. According to the lawsuit, the defendant miner used patented technology held by Malikie in its bitcoin mining operations.

Legal expert Aaron Brogan said that such lawsuits are not usually directed against individual bitcoin users, but could have a significant financial impact on the defendant miners, who could face six years of royalty recovery if they lose the lawsuit. Niko Demchuk, head of legal at AMLBot, believes that Malikie's claim may be difficult to sustain if the patent in question has expired or only covers the technology before the implementation of Bitcoin's ECC. The outcome of this case will depend on the specific scope of the patent and the court's interpretation.
