Russian President Putin recently pointed out at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum that Israel now has nearly 2 million residents from the former Soviet Union (including Russia) immigrants (accounting for 15-20% of the total population), which makes Israel "almost a Russian-speaking country." He emphasized that this large Russian-speaking population is an important factor that Russia must always consider when dealing with the situation in the Middle East.
