Amazon net profit of $62.647 billion cannot be judged by EPS alone: How to break down Anthropic's $53.415 billion income
This quarter, Amazon's GAAP net profit was $62.647 billion, with diluted EPS of $5.75; last year's same period net profit was $18.164 billion, with diluted EPS of $1.68. Comparing EPS alone shows a very high increase, but this does not mean that retail and AWS operating profits rose at the same rate. Consolidated operating profit increased from $19.189 billion to $27.461 billion, a 43% growth, which is clearly different in scale from the change in net profit.
The difference mainly lies in non-operating items. The official income statement shows interest income of $1.295 billion, interest expense of $1.314 billion, and other net income of $53.415 billion. Amazon explained in its release that this quarter's net profit includes about $53.4 billion in pre-tax gains related to the Anthropic investment. This gain is part of the GAAP results but does not belong to the operating profits of the North America, International, or AWS segments.
Pre-tax profit thus reached $80.857 billion, with income tax expense of $18.199 billion, resulting in a net profit of $62.647 billion. The increase from operating profit of $27.461 billion to pre-tax profit of $80.857 billion was mainly driven by other income. Attributing the entire $5.75 EPS to AWS or AI product monetization would mix investment asset revaluation with customer revenue.
The cash flow statement provides another check. This quarter's net profit of $62.647 billion starts as the operating cash flow starting point, but investment and other non-operating gains brought a negative adjustment of $53.381 billion; depreciation and amortization added $19.988 billion, stock-based compensation added $6.038 billion, and deferred income tax increased by $17.691 billion. After non-cash and working capital adjustments, Q2 operating cash flow was $45.387 billion. Net profit exceeding operating cash flow clearly shows that investment gains cannot be regarded as equivalent operational cash receipts.
