Will all L1s return to Ethereum L2?
I found an interesting article and I want to share my thoughts on it.
There are many points worth considering, so it's long, but I recommend reading the entire original text.
(Above all, I really like the attached image.)
It is not an exaggeration to say that most of the existing blockchains are derived from @ethereum. (If it is a computing blockchain!) They left to build their own airports with their own purposes. There are too many airports now..
However, Ethereum has evolved technologically and economically over time, and we can see a trend where other chains are returning to Ethereum to expand the runway together.
Ethereum Upgrades for L2
Ethereum is continuously upgrading to lower L2 operating costs and increase scalability. (Dencun → Pectra → PeerDAS → ePBS → Verkle)
Through this, rollups have significantly reduced L1 rollup costs, making it possible to operate the chain like a "software business."
Instead of airlines building their own airports, they can share well-built airports to reduce costs, integrate liquidity, increase transaction volume, and grow the ecosystem.
Migration from L1 to L2
In fact, there are increasing cases of independent chains transitioning to Ethereum L2. Ronin has switched to zkEVM L2, and Celo and Lisk have transitioned to OP Stack L2.
From here on, these are my thoughts. (Lizamong)
New blockchain projects are increasingly choosing Ethereum L2 over launching their own L1.
I believe that unless they have completely independent goals and technologies like Solana or Aptos/Sui, launching a blockchain as L1 serves only the purpose of filling the pockets of foundations and VCs.
L1 is very expensive. It is impossible to fix the issuance amount, and you have to bring in numerous validators and pay them permanent inflation.
However, L2 does not need its own token, and even if it issues tokens, it does not have to spend them all on massive chain maintenance costs.
And I think one of the biggest advantages is in "open-sourcing."
Currently, Ethereum is not developed solely by the Ethereum Foundation. Many L2s using Ethereum are developing and improving Ethereum together.
This is the direction of open source that I consider most ideal.
In fact, like the article suggests, I think it is probably impossible for all L1 chains to enter Ethereum L2.
Solana is already establishing its position in a completely different direction from Ethereum.
However, I agree that most L1 blockchains, except for a few, will either disappear or return to Ethereum L2.
