Polkadot core developer @bkchr has published an article on his implementation of 500ms block times for Polkadot, which is definitely worth a look.
Dot has reduced its block confirmation time from the initial 12 seconds to 6 seconds after the launch of Asynchronous Backing, but Bastion's recent research aims to achieve 500ms block times.

Faster transaction confirmations will lead to a better web2-level instant application experience.
When will it go live?
The testing has been completed, a GitHub PR has been submitted, and the goal is to merge it into the mainline before launching the mainnet by the end of the year.
