Tom Wilson is an Arweave Architect: • CTO at Forward Research • Serial permaweb innovator • Software development legend 🧵 Keep reading to learn about @rakis_me’s story.
Tom first got into coding at the age of 8, long before app stores, smartphones, or even GitHub. That early spark led him to pursue studies at UGA, DeVry, and SouthernTech, setting the stage for an exciting career in the nascent software industry.
A standout achievement was building a 24/7 pharmacy hospice care fulfillment system serving 100,000 daily users, making his company the largest overnight FedEx package shipper in 2006-2007. He certainly knows a thing or two about scaling, a solid foundation for working on AO.
Throughout his career, Tom’s been passionate about learning and educating, skills he’s honed from Web1 to Web3. He’s mentored developers and taught coding skills to children at the CoderDojo in his home town of Charleston, South Carolina.
His efforts in the Charleston community gathered positive attention. In 2017, Tom was given an Entrepreneur of the Year award and was also included in the area’s Top 50 Most Influential list.
Teaching coders and builders helps Tom stay sharp in a fast-paced industry. It keeps him curious as he searches for solutions, which brings us to how he discovered the permaweb.
While working on @_hyper_io, Tom encountered , an open source code repo built on @ArweaveEco. His a-ha! moment came upon realizing that by using Arweave, the code itself would outlive Hyper.
Since that discovery, he’s worked on numerous permaweb projects, including 8pin, Permanotes, and Permapages. Each one reflects his love for clean, minimalist design, and streamlined functionality.

Tom’s growing contributions to the Arweave ecosystem led to a role as a Founder in Residence at Forward Research. Here he is with @samecwilliams, giving a live code demo shortly after AO’s public announcement.
During ao.helloWorld(), @samecwilliams and ao lead developer @rakis_me gave a live coding demo of ao's capabilities, followed by Q&A. Watch the entire demo below to see the power of ao in action.
In May 2024, Tom stepped up as CTO at Forward Research. With the permaweb’s adoption of a hyper parallel computer, the ecosystem needed a technical leader with deep experience. Tom was the perfect fit.
From floppy disks and dial-up modems, to decentralized blockchains, Tom’s seen it all when it comes to code. But the work never ends. With AO’s innovation ramping up, his knowledge and experience is greatly appreciated. It’s an honor to have him in the Arweave ecosystem.
Cheers Tom! Thanks for helping shape the future of decentralized apps and permanent infrastructure. Here’s to many more permaweb innovations.
