ZEC is back in crypto's top 10 after nearly a decade. Zcash cleared $1,000 on Sep 4 for the first time since its volatile 2016 launch, entering the top 10 that day and pushing DOGE to No. 11. By Sep 6, it had traded above $1,200 with a market cap near $20B. That marked a roughly 370% rise from its early-June low; ZEC was near $42 a year ago. The privacy narrative accelerated last October after Naval Ravikant described Zcash as insurance against Bitcoin. Balaji Srinivasan has argued that privacy could define crypto's next phase, while a16z Crypto has called privacy a key moat. Public-market access then expanded: · ZCSH began trading on NYSE Arca on Aug 25 as the first US-listed ETP offering direct spot ZEC exposure. AUM reached about $463M by Sep 4, with at least $34.4M in net inflows since launch · Cypherpunk Technologies held 323,394 ZEC in mid-August and targeted 5% of total supply. Its mining fleet represented about 18% of network hashrate when announced · An SEC inquiry opened in August 2023 closed on Jan 14, 2026 with no recommended enforcement action On-chain adoption is changing too. About 4.88M ZEC, or 28.8% of supply, now sits in shielded pools, up from roughly 8% in early 2024. July's Ironwood upgrade sealed Orchard to new shielded transactions after researchers found a critical proof-circuit soundness bug that created a potential counterfeit-note risk. No known exploitation or unauthorized ZEC creation was found. Ironwood supports a future recovery process, but it does not make Zcash quantum-secure today. The supply design still resembles Bitcoin's: a 21M cap and a projected November 2028 halving from 1.5625 to 0.78125 ZEC per block. Draft ZIP 234 proposes replacing step halvings with a smoother issuance curve. Leverage clearly amplified the move. Near the highs, open interest exceeded $2.6B, while one 24-hour snapshot showed $41.9M in short liquidations. High OI can amplify reversals as well as rallies.
