Closed source limits progress.
I've been an open source evangelist my whole career through Smalltalk, Linux, Apache, Java, and now in blockchain infrastructure.
Corporations struggle with open source even though all their innovation and software runs on open source infrastructure, and the entire internet runs on open source infrastructure and programming languages and environments. Corporations want to own you, the code, the experience, and they ultimately own the issues and ultimate failures.
Open sourcing everything is how we evolve.
For context, I worked on Smalltalk; studying it, Smalltalk’s influence on object-oriented programming indirectly shaped blockchain development. For instance, Solana’s Rust-based smart contracts, Ethereum’s Solidity, and SUI’s Move all draw from paradigms pioneered by Smalltalk. Pharo’s use in prototyping dApps highlights its relevance to blockchain ecosystems. We fought to keep Smalltalk open source, but failed; it was closed and eventually died the same death every closed source software does.
This is not my first rodeo, and I'll fight for open source forever.
