Loose thoughts reflecting on #config2025 On San Francisco — I had the best time in San Francisco for Config. I missed Karl (he wasn’t there all that much). The sun was familiar, traveling alongside my flight from New York. Long walks and jogs were pleasant. Chinatown is nostalgic, as always! On community — The people who put on the conference really care about community, and I loved seeing new and familiar faces—friends, former mentors, new mentors, old coworkers, would-be coworkers, other studio owners, and so on and so forth—hoping that these congenial conversations would bring us a few degrees closer. Honestly, it didn’t really matter what came out of my mouth or what came into my ear; the energy was positive. On craft — The discussion on craft, execution, and excellence is always interesting to me because it happens every year. The meta-commentary changes ever so slightly, until it reaches an eventual tipping point—shifting from seemingly individual thought to collective consciousness, as proven methods become refurbished as counterculture thought. On getting something out of it — A talk can remind you of your why, but it doesn’t have to. You, as your own creative entity, can experiment on your own narratives, dissertations, ways of working, thinking, and creating. Take away what you will, or throw away what you won’t. Move fast, or take it slow, ya know… Be calculated if the season is right for it—or be loose, if that. On sharing or catching up — Perceived output of process can be interpreted through sharing your work or building a new thing. Share your work when you’re ready—or don’t. Experiment with new ways of working, or follow conventionally proven methods. Your undercurrent sings, but it can take a while to align its sonic resonance. Sharing is cathartic, but it’s also resource management. A piece of you leaves every time. It replenishes, but at a much slower pace than it took for you to birth that thought or project in the first place. As technologies develop, they make you move faster—but they also allow you to move slower, more efficiently.
