L2BEAT Recategorization is LIVE! š
This is the biggest update to our framework yet - redefining what it truly means to be an Ethereum L2.
130+ projects re-evaluated. New standards. Clearer definitions. Higher expectations.
Hereās what changed - and why it matters š

Why now?
Because the Ethereum L2 ecosystem is exploding.
š $40B+ TVL
āļø ~300 user ops/sec
But many systems lack core security guarantees - like proof systems or proper data availability.
Users are trusting them blindly. That needs to change.
The term āL2ā is being used loosely.
But being a rollup, validium or optimium isn't just a label - scaling Ethereum implies Ethereum-grade trust assumptions.
So weāve made our framework stricter.
We want to spotlight systems that actually meet the promise.

To be considered an L2 on L2BEAT from now on, a project MUST have:
ā
A fully functioning proof system
ā
For alt-DA L2s - a DA bridge to Ethereum (or robust DAC)
ā
Transparent, verifiable architecture
These are baseline requirements, not stretch goals.

We reviewed all 136 projects listed on L2BEAT.
As a result:
š¢ 26 projects met the new standards and retain their status as Ethereum L2s.
š” The rest were moved to the "Others" section until they catch up.
The rationale behind each recategorisation is available on the respective project pages on L2BEAT.

Here are the projects that passed and are still listed as L2s š

Kudos to these teams for doing the hard work. šŖ
To be clear: being in āOthersā isnāt a failure.
Weāre giving all projects a clear path back. Anyone can return to the L2 list - all they need to do is meet the criteria.
In fact, weād love to help them get there.
Weāre already collaborating with teams planning their roadmap upgrades since we started countdown 6 months ago.
If you want to understand the deep reasoning - from the security risks of missing proof systems to the weaknesses in current DA setups - our full write-up is available here:
Ethereumās rollup-centric future depends on trust-minimized infrastructure.
Weāre committed to reviewing and tracking these systems transparently - proof systems, upgrades and all. This update is a reset - and a call to do better.
Itās time to grow up!
