Is the U.S. personally pulling prices up your market? Don't overthink it—you're not buying BTC, you're buying someone else's closing order
On July 30, the yen surged sharply against the dollar from 163.98 to 157.98, a single-day surge of 3.3%, the largest in nearly three years.
Japan spent 8.45 trillion yen (about 52.8 billion USD).
Record-breaking? Not enough.
The United States has also stepped in.
The New York Fed, on behalf of the Treasury, directly bought yen — the first direct intervention by the U.S. and Japan in nearly 30 years.
Finance Minister Becent's meeting notes were captured by Reuters photographers—"Buying yen, 5 billion to 10 billion dollars."
And then?
The entire crypto world plunged. In the past 24 hours, over 90,000 people were liquidated. Bitcoin fell 2.9%.
Shouldn't you be going up? Cooling geopolitical risks, weakening dollar, loose liquidity—the script was so well written, so why is it losing money again?
Because you overlooked one thing: when the yen surges, who will be the first to pay the bill?
In recent years, global investors have done one thing—borrow yen to buy everything.
Japan's rate is 1%, the U.S. rate is 3.5%-3.75%, with a spread of 275 basis points.
Borrowing yen at almost zero cost, then exchanging dollars to buy US Treasuries, US stocks, and Bitcoin.
This game is called yen arbitrage trading.
The cheaper the yen, the more enjoyable the arbitrage. The weaker the yen, the higher the leverage. In recent months, the yen has fallen to a 40-year low, with arbitrage positions piling up to the ceiling.
And now?
The yen surged 3.3% in one day.
The borrowed yen suddenly became more expensive.
Leveraged arbitrageurs have only one choice—close their positions. Sell your assets and exchange them for yen to repay debts.
What to sell? US Treasuries, US stocks, Bitcoin.
The market is now pricing in an optimistic scenario of "successful intervention and yen stabilization."
But what you don't set is a bloody script of "arbitrage trampling to close positions."
In August 2024, the Bank of Japan raised interest rates moderately, triggering partial unwinding of arbitrage trades, causing BTC to plummet in response.
How much did the yen rise that time? Less than 2%.
What about this time? 3.3%。 And it's still ongoing.
Historical data shows that after each rate hike by the Bank of Japan, Bitcoin has pulled back an average of about 27%.
This time, it's not a rate hike—it's a direct injection of money into intervention by the US and the United States.
Stronger and more impactful.
You think the yen has risen and the dollar has weakened, so BTC should rise.
But BTC's short-term price has never depended on "should," but rather on "who is being forced to sell."
$52.8 billion in intervention funds entered the forex market, not your crypto world.
Meanwhile, those funds that borrowed yen to buy BTC are selling BTC back to the market to exchange for yen.
You're waiting for a pull, while others are closing their positions.
How large is the scale of yen arbitrage trading? No one can say for sure. But one thing is certain—much larger than what the market currently prices.
From April to May, Japan invested 11.73 trillion yen (about $73 billion) in intervention, but the effect lasted only a few weeks.
How long can this 8.45 trillion yuan, plus the United States' cooperation, last?
Intervention can treat the symptoms, but not the root cause.
The US-Japan interest rate spread remains at 275 basis points, and the underlying logic behind yen depreciation remains unchanged.
But the short-term shock is real—for every 1% increase in yen, countless arbitrage positions are being unused. For every position closed, a batch of BTC is dumped into the market.
Operational advice
Focus on USD/JPY.
If the exchange rate stays below 157, the wave of arbitrage closing may have just begun.
If it rebounds above 160, it means the intervention effect is fading, the yen is weakening again, and arbitrage trading will make a comeback.
Either way, that's not a reason to blindly buy the dip.
