A couple months ago, Matt from @SonicLabs (chief strategy officer) gave me a call wishing to acquire our name and Ticker, after we have already built a large community and were in the middle of planning for TGE. We’ve been building without being aware of Fantom’s plans to switch their names to Sonic, and updating their ticker to $S on all existing exchanges.
We receive information that Matt has been advocating all the exchanges they are listed on to delist our name citing trader confusion. However, we already had a large community following, and many exchanges also supported new Solana builders - they knew we were in it for the long haul, and rejected Matt’s request.
Matt proceeds to message our team members, initially as "co-marketing efforts" and eventually we hop on a call together. I was excited to chat and maybe work together, as we were much smaller at the time than Sonic Labs. @AndreCronjeTech is someone many founders look up to, and has been an inspiration to many.
Once we were on the call, Matt asked us what it'd take to switch our ticker and name. However, as soon as we gave an offer to the team, they told us there will be no cash on the table - but instead told us that they have superior technology, which they will allow us to use for free. They didn’t dive into or ask a single question about what we were building - showing no interest or respect - to any founder, this is a rude gesture as we believe in our own team and production, but we had better things to worry about. So we ignored Matt.
Fast forward to Token2049 Dubai. Matt DMs me and says "thanks for having us at all the events" - implying that we’re doing free marketing for them given the naming mixup. I recognize that there’s room to improve on our marketing, and take the joke. I proposed, "maybe we should do something Sonic & Sonic" thinking it could be a genuine opportunity to explore, Matt scoffs and says "lol na, we'd never be interested in something like that".
Disappointing, but not the end of the world. This industry is still small. We should collaborate and uplift each other where we can - not try to push people out. I still believe there's a chance to bring our communities together. Web3 needs more bridges, not divides. Soon we’ll have a sick Sonic x Sonic campaign live, hopefully. It’ll be a legendary one to remember, Let’s win together.
