Voters want to rein in the AI data center boom. Restrictions on new construction could make the biggest cloud companies even stronger.

The AI juggernaut just took another stab to the heart in the midterms - Blue Wave doesn't want the data centers. A reminder: 1. elec/grid incapacity 2. 🔪 data centers shortage 🗡️ 3. impossible revenues on circular funding 4. chip shortages 5. geopolitical meddling & alignment

We believe the largest bottleneck to data centers and AI will be political. As a result of the latest midterm elections, turning on new data centers is likely to become more difficult. That points to a prolonged compute shortage, which should support higher pricing for longer than most expect. It favors two groups: companies that already have compute, and companies that will successfully stand up new compute.

Are Data Centers getting canceled? With Democratic victories in Texas and Georgia investors are worried that this could bring new permitting restrictions, potentially slowing the AI buildout. Nearly 30% of U.S. data center capacity expected to come online in 2028 is concentrated in Texas alone. But what people are missing is that the push back on Data Centers construction is not new. ▪️ ERCOT already had a moratorium on the projects ▪️ In NY, a one-year moratorium was imposed for data centers requiring 50 MW or more. ➡️ 2027: Out of the ~40GW expected in the US in ‘27, 70% are permitted and under construction… … Assuming typical delays, equipment availability, permitting, etc., we expect 25-30GW to come online in ‘27. ➡️ 2028: Out of the ~60GW expected in ‘28, we expect to be able to build ~35-40GW. And this has very little to do with the election. Bottom line is that the projects that have questionable economics, location, power source were going to come online regardless of the elections. Separately, delaying compute supply doesn't make AI demand disappear. It makes existing capacity more valuable. GPU rental prices were already increasing before the election. H100 rents are up ~35% since early January, four years after launch. Newer B200 rents rose 11% in the past month alone. If AI demand continues growing while new capacity gets pushed out, we could see GPU rental prices rise significantly further. That has important implications for the hardware cycle: ➡️ Existing GPUs could command higher rental rates, improving returns on deployed capital. ➡️ Older GPU generations could retain their economic value longer. ➡️ Delayed construction could spread hardware spending over more years, extending the investment cycle. The bottom line is building physical hardware is hard. Is more regulation making it harder? Sure. But not enough to justify 50% drop in hardware stocks.

This is great to see I was looking for signs like these to signal that we are close to a bottom because I’ve felt these over the years and 6 months on I always regretted not to have bought the dips Democrats may say we need to halt all data centres but reality is more nuanced when faced with the prospects of 1000s of blue collar job losses and destruction of capex The congressmen and senators all need the funding and revolving doors and the party goes on with a hiccup

we're fucked. absolutely fucked. the ai trade is over. we all top blasted and holding bags now. i can't believe it. how could we have been so wrong. this market makes no sense. my spleen hurts. i haven't seen green in such a long time. i miss money. i miss smiling. i miss sleeping not checking my phone every 1 min. i miss waking up happy. i should've just stayed in cash like a good boy. im like icarus flew too close to the sun. my ego got the better of me. there is no alpha. only luck. lady fortuna has left us to fend for ourselves. faith does not work. praying does not work. i am tired. hedgies are waging war and we are caught in the middle. how do you survive this. when will it end.

China has about 822 data centers up or under construction right now. The U.S. has about 3700 data centers up or under construction right now. In terms of capacity China is about half of the U.S. (more power per center)
