This change raises L1 data capacity and transaction throughput, doubling the limit over the past year. @VitalikButerin has suggested a possible 5x increase ahead, and proposals like EIP-9698 explore even larger, gradual expansions.

Just a year after the community started pushing for higher gas limits, Ethereum is now running with a 60M block gas limit.
That’s a 2× increase in a single year — and it’s only the beginning.
