Moonbeam is a Polkadot parachain that supports smart contract-based decentralized applications. As an Ethereum-compatible network, developers can deploy existing DApps with minimum code changes in familiar programming languages like Solidity and Vyper. Moonbeam's native cryptocurrency is called Glimmer, but it is often referred to by its ticker symbol GLMR. GLMR is used within the network's governance structure, to incentivize node operators, and to pay for smart contract execution and transaction fees.
In addition to making it easy for developers to deploy Ethereum applications on the network, being built using Substrate, Moonbeam is compatible with many of the more established network's tools, including MetaMask and Hardhat. As a Polkadot parachain, Moonbeam also benefits from the extensive bridging ecosystem between Polkadot and other networks, enabling simplified cross-chain interoperability.
