Retired artist was scammed by fake Coinbase customer service and lost more than $2 million in crypto assets
According to Cointelegraph, 67-year-old retired artist Ed Suman suffered losses including 17.5 bitcoins and 225 Ethereum, with a total value of more than $2 million, due to a fake Coinbase customer service scam. The scammers disguised themselves as Coinbase security personnel and obtained their seed phrases through phishing websites to transfer all of their assets in two installments.
Shortly after the incident, Coinbase disclosed that its Indian customer service staff had been bribed, resulting in the leak of 1% of monthly active users. Coinbase said it would provide between $180 million and $400 million in compensation to affected users.
