About YenIntervention
After Japan and Korea sold dollars to defend their currencies on July 30, sending USD/JPY down 2.6% in a day, the escalation continues. BOJ data implies intervention of about 8.45 trillion yen, potentially a record single-day FX move. Sources say the US Treasury told banks via the NY Fed on July 31 to "stand ready for further action," and the FT reported the NY Fed bought yen on Treasury's behalf. Direct US intervention for another nation's currency is extremely rare.

Japan likely spent a record ¥8.45 trillion (~$53 billion) intervening to prop up the yen on Thursday, July 30 — potentially the largest single-day currency intervention in the country's history. The yen jumped from ¥162.80 to around ¥157 per dollar within about an hour that night, its biggest gain in over two years, with reports of coordinated US-Japan buying extending into Friday trading (yen strengthening 1%+ against both dollar and euro).
Officials followed their usual playbook of "strategic ambiguity" — Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama declined to confirm any intervention took place, even as Bloomberg's analysis of BOJ account data strongly implied it. This marks at least the third intervention episode this year (following an earlier ¥5.48 trillion move in late April), as persistent yen weakness — driven by the wide Japan-US interest rate gap — keeps testing Tokyo's resolve.
But the rally already looks fragile: it stalled Friday after the Bank of Japan held rates steady and Governor Ueda offered little fresh policy support for the currency, leaving the yen swinging between gains and losses. Analysts expect the effects to be short-lived unless the underlying rate differential narrows — verbal warnings and intervention buy time, but don't fix the structural driver of yen weakness.
